Confidence is not always easily cultivated, yet it’s a virtue that increases our quality of life, a trait that we all desire, and a state of being that we have all struggled with at one time or another. This Meditation on Confidence stretches beyond the confines of traditional meditation and introduces two highly useful and effective therapy techniques:
The first is called Resourcing. When we’re looking to evoke a certain way of being from within, it can be helpful to recall times in the past that we’ve more fully embodied this particular state. We then create mindful imagery around ourselves in this past situation and integrate this into our nervous system and psyche as a resource for future situations.
The second technique I teach you in this practice is often called the Future Template. A visualization exercise, the future template allows you to witness yourself embodying a confident state in an anticipated event. Much research has shown that visualization, or mental rehearsal of upcoming events, is just as effective as actual physical practice. I have worked with many a client who has experienced positive outcomes via participation in this process.
There will inevitably be times in life when we will need more of a particular quality than we feel we are capable of embodying. Whether it be confidence, faith, courage, hope, positive self-regard, or trust, we’ll feel that we’re lacking or don’t have enough. Resourcing, Future Template and Meditation are tools that can assist you in realizing the highest truth about yourself. The truth is, you are absolutely capable and wired to be all that you desire to be. In the words of the Sufi poet, Rumi: What you seek is seeking you.
I hope you’ll set aside 20 minutes or so to join me for this practice. What appears to be a trivial act can produce the most profound and life-altering results.
